International Day of Families
The Social Workers Association of Alberta recognizes the critical impact on family dynamics in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change, particularly in the context of the increase in wildfires, droughts, and flooding events around the globe and across Western Canada. As we commemorate the 2024 International Day of Families theme of “Families and Climate Change” (United Nations, n.d.), we underscore the urgency of raising awareness about the profound impacts of climate change on families.
The devastating wildfires that ravage forests, the prolonged droughts that threaten agricultural livelihoods, and the destructive floods that disrupt communities underscore the urgent need for collective action. Families around the world and in Western Canada are on the frontlines of these environmental crises, grappling with displacement, loss of homes, livelihoods, and, tragically, even the loss of loved ones.
As social workers committed to the well-being of families and communities, we advocate for comprehensive approaches to climate action that prioritize resilience, sustainability, and social justice. By empowering families through education, access to information, and community engagement, we can mobilize grassroots efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and build more resilient communities.
On this International Day of Families, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting the well-being of families and future generations by taking bold and decisive action to address the interconnected challenges of climate change.
