International Day of Transgender Visibility 2024
On March 31st, as we mark International Day of Transgender Visibility, let us shine a bright light on the beauty and strength of gender diverse individuals and communities.
On this day, and every day, The Social Workers Association of Alberta (SWAA) stands firm in our support for transgender rights and dignity. SWAA urges Alberta's government to retract its proposed regressive legislation targeting gender and sexually diverse youth. These policies, announced by the United Conservative Party, threaten the rights and well-being of children, youth, families, educators, and healthcare professionals. Such measures, including requiring parental consent for name and pronoun changes for minors and banning crucial healthcare options, violate fundamental human rights and professional ethics.
SWAA aligns with 80+ legal, health, education, Two Spirit, religious, union, and sports organizations in condemning these discriminatory actions (Wells, 2024). Moreover, we advocate for gender-affirming care, recognizing its vital role in promoting the mental health and well-being of transgender and non-binary youth. Let us reject harmful legislation and work together to create a safer, more inclusive environment for all.
