Pride Month

Pride Month, celebrated each June, commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a landmark event in the 2SLGBTQ+ rights movement. This month, we honor the bravery and resilience of 2SLGBTQ+ communities while acknowledging the progress made and the work still needed.

In Alberta, recent announcements of anti-trans policies are both alarming and unacceptable. These measures infringe on human rights and threaten the well-being of transgender and non-binary individuals. The Social Workers Association of Alberta (SWAA) stands in strong opposition to these policies and advocates for the protection, support, and celebration of all 2SLGBTQ+ people.

SWAA calls for the recognition of gender-affirming care and inclusion of gender and sexually diverse communities in education, sport, and everywhere we live and work.

For more details, please read our statements on Alberta Anti-Trans Policies, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, and International Day of Transgender Visibility.

This Pride Month, let's unite in our commitment to fostering a society that values, upholds, and celebrates the rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Happy Pride Month!
